My First Dia & Co Box

Not a sponsored post.

I had heard about Stitch Fix a couple of months ago, and I thought it sounded like an excellent service. A personal stylist sending clothes to my house to pick and chose from? YES PLEASE. But I was bummed to see it was not for the plus size ladies. I can fit into some "non-plus size" garments, but I'm still mainly a plus sized girl.

Recently, I learned about Dia & Co, which is a similar service, for curvy girls. I was so pumped, and ready to give it a whirl. I filled out a survey with my size/preferences/likes, and I ordered my box right away.

When the box arrived on my porch, I was so excited. The box included a decorated quote, and a note from my stylist explaining why she picked certain items and suggestions on how to style the garments. The box had 5 items-a pendant necklace, black leggings, a wrap dress, jersey twist top, and a patterned/lace top. I actually ended up loving most of it and liking all of it.

I narrowed my choices down to the dress and the two tops. I could only afford to keep two!

I ended up keeping the two tops, and I love them! I feel super cute in them.

Fashion has never been my thing. I've spent years hiding under my clothes, and I figured my clothing didn't matter, as I was "too fat," that it didn't make a difference how I dressed. Yes, I know I was wrong, and I should have dressed with confidence all along. But I'm starting now, and I can't wait for my 2nd box.

Project Life 2016: Week 7

I am really diggin' the color scheme in this layout for week 7, as the colors pair so well with the week of L-O-V-E that is Valentine's Day (in my humble opinion).

On this side, I included our trivia night win, a little info about throwing out my back (the general instructions card), and trying the specialty Starbucks drink for V-day (showing off my V-day jamicure).

I also included a facebook status from my supervisor. That week she was telling me that she saw a coyote outside her window, and then that reminded me I had seen a coyote the week before AT WORK and forgot to mention it, I was in session at the time (which everyone teased me about, you know because I subjected everyone to death by coyote by not alerting them). The whole incident made it onto facebook, so I used the status as reminder of the crazy incident!

The second half was Valentine's weekend proper. So it has our meal from Smash Burger and our gifts from each other. I loved the way I embellished the simple pocket card with the "Pink Makes Me Happy" piece, I actually got this off a pocket card.

What We are Watching (Now that We Don't Have Cable)

For the second year in a row, as soon as the Packers' football season was over, we cut our cable. Last year, I got really nervous about this, not that I was really watching much TV, but it seemed like a drastic move. However, with netflix and the like, I didn't miss it too much. Plus, it saved us a lot of money! So that made it worth it.

One of the benefits of not having cable is we are watching more shows together. We are both crazy about Mad Men (On the 4th season, no spoilers). And we continue to share with each other two of our all-time favorite shows, West Wing (his) and Gilmore Girls (mine). And I'm so excited about the reunion of Gilmore Girls, I could burst!

I am finally finishing The Tudors, which I started eons ago. Although I keep expecting to have a "Grey Gardens" moment while watching it, since I wasn't quite sure where I left off the last time I stopped watching the series. And if you are wondering what a "Grey Gardens" moment is, I will explain.

A couple of years ago, I rented the movie Grey Gardens. Adam kept telling me I had already watched it, but I didn't believe him. However, half way through the show one of the actresses did something that kicked off something in my memory, and I realized I had seen it!  But no Grey Gardens moment quite yet.

Adam has been watching the X-Files reboot online. And I have recently started watching the People vs. OJ Simpson. I have been interested in that case since the world followed it, when I was just 10 years old. It was the first big crime case I even recall.

And when there is nothing to watch? I follow about a million podcasts,  and I have plenty of books to read!

Squirrel!

Lately, Link has been tortured by our backyard squirrels. They have been running up and down the roof, storing nuts in the lip of our chimney. I suppose this is to get ready for the winter, I'm convinced is not going to come this year.

Today, he might have succeeded in his attempts to scare them (or at least distract them), as one squirrel FELL into the chimney.

This afternoon I got an email from Adam while I was working, entitled FYI. When I opened it, it said,"Just FYI, there is a squirrel in our chimney, so I lowered a rope down, to give it a way to escape." That is one of the oddest e-mails I've ever received.

Adam was pretty sure the rope trick worked, as the scrambling sounds quit.  But tonight we had to double check the chimney to make sure the squirrel had left.

I walked into the kitchen to find Adam having made a chair barrier, which lead out the patio door. I guess this was a road map for the squirrel just in case he came barreling down Christmas vacation style.

Link was, of course, standing guard near by (a.k.a. being useless), as Adam messed around up there with a broom. Luckily, we suffered no squirrel attacks, he had indeed left the chimney, and now I know Adam is a modern day Macguyver with his whole rope trick.

Although I should have already known this about him, considering the whole incident was reminiscent of the mouse in the window incident of 2011!

This is home-ownership at its finest.

Notes from the Week

We got first place in trivia Monday night, which was super fun, because it is super rare. My mother, Adam, and I go nearly every Monday night. It is steep competition, there are often times 15+ teams there, and some have 8+ people in them. It makes it hard to hold your own when you are just a lowly team of three. But we do frequently do well, and we often place in the top 3. This is the third time in three years, we've gotten first place, which is something to celebrate!

Tuesday was a big election in our little town. The vote was on whether or not to raise property taxes to improve our local city schools. The polls closed at 7, and I get off work at 6. So I was killing myself to commute home from work and pick up Adam so we could vote. Voting is super important to me, so I was super anxious we wouldn't make it! I even got stuck, by not 1 but 2 trains.

When I finally got Adam, I told him not to tell the polling people we had recently moved, because we hadn't updated our address, and I figured it would be a problem! But God Bless Adam, he is a better person than me, and he did tell them we moved! I was already keyed up due to the anxiety of getting there, and for a moment, I was super irate at him. They ALMOST didn't let us vote, but they were nice, and let us anyway. We were the very last people to vote.

Unfortunately, we voted yes to support our city schools, but most of the city voted no. So we lost. On ward and upwards I suppose.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a new dress I loved. I probably just loved it because it was yellow, that is my favorite color. I wore it to work on Wednesday, and I got through the morning with no problems. And then on lunch, I went to wal-greens to pick up a few things, when I felt a little draft on my backside. I never heard a rip or anything, but apparently the slit in the back on my dress had torn open. My butt was hanging out, and  I was mortified! I spent the rest of the time in the store, holding my dress together and running toward the car. I had to barrel home, so I could change, and this made me 10 minutes late getting back from my lunch break. I can only hope my butt wasn't hanging out all morning long, as I walked in front of people quite frequently!  At least my boss thought the story was funny, when I texted her why I was running late!

Wednesday was National Dog Day, and this is the picture I shared of my little stinker, on his walk at a nearby trail. I just had to take a moment and honor this sweet, sweet boy, who has added so much love and energy to our household. We love him more and more everyday. It's stupid crazy how much we obsess over this little dude. But we won't apologize for that!

Photo Shoot Pictures

Adam and I did a fun little photo shoot a few weeks ago with a lovely, local photographer, Amanda Whitley. I wanted some new shots, because we have had no "fancy" photos since we got married 6 and a half years ago! A lot has changed since then, and I wanted some updated shots.  I love the results, I can't wait to hang them around our home. These are my favorites!

P.S.-Getting photos taken was Summer Manifesto Item #10

Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, & Pieology

This weekend ended up being such a 1990's weekend. Not only did I go to a Garth Brooks' concert, Adam and I also went to see Jurassic Park World. Adam loves, loves, loves Jurassic Park. He waxes poetically about when he first moved out to California, and was living in his little studio apartment without cable all alone, so he would pop in his Jurassic Park DVD night after night.

I certainly have an appreciation for Jurassic Park. I'm pretty sure I saw it in theaters, and I remember being traumatized by the scene where the T-rex eats the lawyer in the porta potty. Oh and when the raptors were chasing the kids in the kitchen?!? Terrifying.

Adam was so stocked by the new movie that when I told him about going to see Garth Brooks, he commented that  it was the Jurassic World opening weekend, and he thought we wouldn't get to go see it. I promised we would go opening weekend when I got back from Birmingham. And we decided to go on Sunday night.

Saturday night we re-watched Jurassic Park in preparation for the new film.

We actually really enjoyed the movie! I liked the plot (that people are now bored by "regular" dinosaurs, so they have to develop a new dinosaur, and that leads to the mayhem). Dominus Rex is a pretty scary dinosaur.

The movie was a fun romp, not as good as the original, but still excellent!

And in case we didn't have enough of dinosaur goodness this weekend, we also purchased the Lego Jurassic World video game , and it is a blast!

After the movie, we headed out to have dinner at a new restaurant Pieology. I consider myself to be a pizza connoisseur, so I was super stoked about this.   Basically you build your own pizza (kinda like you do your sandwich at a Subway), and then they bake it right in front of you.

I made an Alfredo pizza (rimmed with olive oil) with meatballs, mushrooms, tomatoes, feta cheese, and black olives. It was amazing! I had left overs for days. I can't wait to try more creations, I feel like a bit of a mad, pizza scientist.

Five Things

Just Five Little Things Happening in Life Lately:

Loving family walks with Link right now. Although Link is the BEST PUPPY ever, teaching him to walk has not been the easiest. I've never had a dog just not know how to walk? There was the first few walks of dragging him from behind, now he knows how to lead, but wants to fight us when we get close to home. It doesn't help that our harness isn't working right, so if he fights us, he can wiggle easily out of the harness. We are fixing that this weekend.

Finally, I got all my scrapbook pages from Disneyworld printed, and put in the special book Adam bought me at Christmas. I love it oh so much. I want to show it to everyone, and I look at it all the time. This trip was so special, and now I will never forget any part of it.

I kind of love this selfie. I took this on the one day I worked during the two weeks of being sick. I worked that one day because I had a steroid shot a few days prior, which tricked me into thinking I felt better. Of course, I woke up the next day and was clearly not better! But that one day of feeling OK was a golden moment in a crap filled two weeks.

Also during the week I was sick? I heard there was a  Birthday Cake Frappuccino at Starbucks, and I was so bored at home, that I went out one night just to try a bit of it. Is it weird to buy something just to have a few sips? I don't think so. I have always been a foodie at heart. Plus it was SO WORTH IT. So good.

Sometimes your niece is having a wedding shower in Houston, Texas, and you decide two weeks before the shower that you just have to come! So you buy a last minute ticket, and then plan for one whirl wind weekend. Anything for my girl.

Life Lately

Last Friday, I had a total Brittany day. What is a Brittany day? It is basically a day where I go on a date with myself. After work, I headed over to fleet feet to get some new running shoes. My hip was hurting after one of my runs post Disney, and that is a sure sign that my shoes are failing me from overuse. I was sad to retire my old blues (and by retire, I mean now they are my walking around shoes), but I can't wait to see where my new reds will take me! After shoe shopping, I went to Chicken Salad Chic for dinner, and then took myself to see Cinderella. Sometimes I love getting lost in a movie all by my lonesome. The movie was such eye candy. I will do my full review during my end of month round-up.

I can always, always tell the change in seasons by the trees at my local running park. When I ran on Wednesday, I was overwhelmed by the beauty and wonderful smell of the Dogwood Blossoms. Plus, everyone was out and about with their children and dogs. It made my so hyped for Spring time. It has been one long and cold winter!

I can not get into March Madness at all, I am not a Basketball girl (I'm Green Bay Packers girl all the way)! But I'm all about some March Magic! Which is a social media contest to vote for the best ride in either Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Of course, I've narrowed it down on my bracket to Peter Pan's Flight (my personal favorite). I even bought a shirt from the Disney store to show my Neverland Galleons team spirit. I'm having a lot of fun with this.

We are having so much fun with our puppy, Link. He is quite the character, and so full of energy! For a 4 month old puppy, he manages to take up the whole couch, and he snores like an old man with a cold. He seems to be fairly smart and is catching on to his training quite well. There was only one night where he whined after we gated him into our master bathroom, and now he doesn't make a peep at bed time. He loves to run and play. And we are having a battle of wills when it comes to chewing on shoes. He would would win the gold medal in the Olympics for best snuggler. I can't believe he has been in our home a week, some reason I get a little sad when I think of him sitting in a shelter for months! But he is home now, feels so good to adopt a rescue.

A Wisdom (Teeth) Less Age

This morning I had one of the worst food experiences of my entire life. Which says a lot, because I have had numerous, terrible food experiences. I had a sandwich once (I can't even remember what kind) in an Italy airport where  the texture was so mealy & awful, I can still conjure up the taste 10 years later, and it still makes me cringe. I once drank milk over a month expired at my Dad's house, a mistake I can chalk up to having a terrible cold that totally cut off my sense of smell.

But none of these experiences are as bad as this morning, when I ate a bite of watermelon. Yeap, that's right watermelon.  Because on Wednesday morning, I had my wisdom teeth removed. And I forgot that watermelon is very juicy and very acidic. It is not at all HARMLESS. That acid got into those open holes and it burned. For 15 whole minutes I was dying, I may never view watermelon the same way again.

Also after the watermelon incident, Adam said I shouldn't even eat watermelons right now because watermelon has seeds. And what if one of those seeds got into the holes in my gums, and then the gums healed over the seed, and I grew a watermelon in my mouth.

This was not at all helpful.

Recovering from this surgery has been a lot harder than I would have thought. I have had a lot of pain, in some ways, more pain than I did after my stomach surgery. That was just discomfort, but do you know how much you use your mouth? Yeah, you use it all the time. I have taken way more pain medicine as well.

Eating has been difficult, which you would think that one year post weight loss surgery I would be used to complicated eating. But all of my usual foods were too difficult to chew, and I was starting to get weak from not eating. So out of desperation, I allowed Adam to bring me a Coconut Cream Pie milkshake from Sonic. I won't lie I was sort of excited about this indulgence.  Do you know how long it has been since I had a milkshake? But just as most sweets taste to me now, I really didn't enjoy it that much. And all the sugar just sat on my stomach in a weird way. So now I'm sticking to mainly greek yogurt and a few bites of Adam's shells and cheese to keep me going.

I am also kind of cranky in general. Which is not fair to Adam because he seriously is a great care taker. He picks me up food to eat, waits on me when I need something, and wakes me up from couch naps to make sure I get my antibiotics on time.

But I am just impatient, and I am ready for this to all be over with, I am bored, yet don't feel like doing anything. I actually am craving a run, that always lifts my mood considerably. And I just want to get back to the day in, day out routine where I can eat what I'm used to eating, and I can stop walking around looking like a chipmunk.

Not that it has been all bad. I have cleared out the DVR, taken 4 hour naps, and watched numerous movies. But come on, that is only fun for a few days!

Happy, Little Week

This week was filled with so many happy, little moments that I felt like sharing a little bit. I'm really trying to notice and appreciate the small things in my life lately.  I get so caught up in planning for the next big thing, and I miss out on the present.

It all started Monday when I got a wild hair to go into Old Navy to see if I could get some active wear more appropriate for fall/winter running. It is getting super cold out there (the other night when I did my five miler I lost all feeling in my hands for about a half hour after I came inside.  (Gloves are so needed, and yes, I bought some).

I really didn't know if I would fit into any of their stuff as I haven't been able to wear Old Navy in years and years. I thought it might be possible that I could squeak by in their XXL. So I took a whole bunch of XXL clothes into the dressing room. I was pretty sure they wouldn't fit, as I'm used to not being able to fit into the largest size at most stores.  But when I put them on they were too big!! I had to downsize to an XL. It felt so great.

I bought so many clothes. My two favorite pieces are these super cozy polar bear pj pants and the boots. I have never been able to wear boots, as my calves were too big. I was always jealous of girls in their boots. So to have a pair is the best feeling. I feel so good about myself in them.  Also, I fit into a size 18 now. That is 10 whole sizes down!

I've been dying to go see Big Hero 6. The million and one Disney podcasts I listened to kept talking about how good it is. Adam wasn't really into seeing it, so I took myself on Wednesday night. Wednesday nights are usually spent relaxing at home, so it felt fun to mix it up a bit. I had the theater nearly all to myself. I got to curl up, prop my feet up, and enjoy the movie. The movie was fantastic, I loved every minute of it! And the short before it was so precious! Go see it now.

Last but not least, I had a few good runs this week on my lunch break. I'm soaking up the vivid, bright, fall colors on the trees right now. They take my breath away daily. I know soon they will all be dead. So I'm just trying to take them in every chance I get.

I'm a Blogmopolitan & Happy Weekend!

I had a lot of fun filling out this little quiz located here. I always loved those celebrity quizzes in Cosmo, so I had to give it a whirl. But I'm also popping in to wish everyone a happy, happy weekend!  I'm hoping to get into a few shenanigans, despite having the knowledge that it will most likely be a non-stop rainy weekend.

I've Got Some New Shoes On

Y'all, I'm feeling so much better than I did when I wrote that totally whiny post a few days ago. And it all has to do with a new pair of shoes. Yes, in the words of singer Paolo Nutini, I've got some new shoes on and everything is going to be fine!

Friday, I headed over to Fleet Feet to get a new pair of running shoes. I've been interested in their custom fitting process for a while, but I have been avoiding it because good running shoes are pricey. But due to the pain I've been having and the worn out state of my shoes, I knew it was time.

The first thing my consultant did was measure my feet. I've never known my true shoe size as it varies so much. My feet are more wide than they are long (flintstone feet), which always leads me into buying shoes that are too big for me.  So it was nice to learn my actual size.

Next, she had me run on a treadmill. I learned that I run as I should on my right foot but over pronate (inward roll of the foot) on my left foot. And my left leg is the one causing me all the pain (although it is possible that I'm overpronating because of my leg pain but I feel it is vice versa).

I got fitted for a really nice pair of shoes with a lot of cushioning and support, which hopefully will help correct my running technique. If not, she also suggested some orthopedic inserts for even more support. I also got some nice moisture wicking socks, oh la la.

I did a half mile run on the treadmill to test them out, and it gave me no extra pain! So tomorrow I will do a mile or two and continue to up my mileage until I'm back to four miles (as long as I'm not in added pain). I'm hopeful the shoes will be the solution I need to get back to training.

Which is good, since Disney Princess sign ups are two days away!!

Bits N' Pieces

Just a few things I wanted to share that didn't really need their own blog post:

1. A few weekends ago, Adam and I finally played the game I've coveted since childhood (that he got me for Valentine's Day), 13 Dead End Drive. I seriously love a board game night. I swear sometimes at work, I get really excited when my clients pick a game I want to play.  We really had a fun time with this game, and I won both rounds, Adam was playing it "too careful." It was so very satisfying to drop a chandelier on Adam's head.

2. I am so excited to be heading down to Jackson, Mississippi, this weekend for their famous St. Paddy's Day Parade! I stocked up on so much "bling" for my girlfriends and me to wear. I've been somewhat obsessed! You would think by how excited I am that I was 100% Irish, instead of what I really am, just a wee bit Irish.

3. I found this adorable gastric sleeve plushie from this etsy shop. When I came across it, I knew I just had to have it. It is Pompeii in stuffed animal form! It is also a daily reminder of what I'm working with and working toward!

4. I've been working on this 1,000 piece Normal Rockwell puzzle for several weekends now. It may be nerdy, but I have complete a 1,000 piece puzzle on my bucket list. I'm finding working on it to be really relaxing. I'm sure it is going to take me several more weekends to complete, but I can't wait to snap in that last piece.

The Book Club That Wasn't

(Recipe Source: 1, 2, 3, 4)

My mom is part of a book club, and this kind of burns my butt or grinds my gears as they say, because I have always wanted to be in a book club. I know, I know I'm such a nerd. My dreams aren't big OK? And I can't really say my mom is  stealing my thunder because both her and my dad gave me an unstoppable love of reading.

So I could have been a part of this club, but they have it on Thursdays, which is one of two days I work uber late, and arguably my most exhausting day due to the fact I run a group for 4-5 year olds that day, who are undeniably cute, and I love them, but they just wear you out! So to attend, I would always be at least 30 minutes late.

Last Thursday was mom's turn to host the book club. I was excited, and I thought this would be an easy way to give the club a whirl.  I decided to take over preparing the snacks, since I just love, love, love trying new recipes. I chose deviled egg dip, jalapeno cheddar poppers, fried raviolis, and desert brownie pizza.

All stuff I can't eat mind you. But all stuff that would allow me to further my culinary skills. I have never fried anything! I have never used my food processor! I have never paired brownies with fruit (scandalous).

I spent all Tuesday night and Wednesday night after work last week, slaving over the stove. Do you know how much reality TV I missed out on? I even managed to burn my finger, testing the temperature of the oil. Yes, I just said I tested the oil temperature with my finger! Not my brightest move I admit, but I truly did not believe it could be that hot after literally a minute on the stove (now I know).

It is really weird to cook bariatric unfriendly food for me, because I can't really taste test the food. I remember that being a Top Chef quick fire challenge one time, now I get the difficulty. This may be TMI, but I did try the fried lobster ravoli and then spit it back out. I had Adam try the deviled egg dip, and then spent many hours obsessing and worrying that my cheddar poppers would be too spicy!

I was super proud of my accomplishments when I went to bed that night. But the next day at work, my mom texted me to tell me book club was being postponed due to possible bad weather. I was all like, "Are you kidding me?"  I was so disappointed, I was ready to wow with my food! I about rolled my eyes outside my head.

[On a side note: Adam and I are both chronic eye rollers, which I get is so disrespectful. But in an argument, we almost always do it to each other. And even though we are both equally guilty, it never fails to make the other person a million times more mad. I'm sure our kids will take gold in the eye rolling Olympics. Yeah, not looking forward to that].

I should have expected it honestly. The week prior we had been having crazy cold temperatures (and snow), and then it was super warm, which is basically a tornado's dream weather! We did indeed have a pretty bad storm that night and even a mini tornado (no one was harmed thank goodness).

If we hadn't had a storm that night, I would have been pretty peeved.

At least my mother enjoyed my food, and she raved about my jalapeno poppers a ridiculous amount (it so fed my fragile ego). But this week when it is time for book club again? They can just enjoy a fruit tray!

Of Love, War, The Olympics, & Snow

So far I have had two snow days off of work, and I don't have to go into work until 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. It is ironic that tomorrow we only have a delay because this afternoon/evening is the only day we have actually seen any snow!

I was woken up from a glorious, afternoon nap by a flurry of text messages from my coworkers about the snow (via group text). They were mostly complaining about cabin fever. I think one coworker summarized the whole conversation by saying, "this weather is bad for my waistline and my relationships!" And my other coworker said, "My husband and I are thinking about going to wal-mart and WE HATE WAL-MART." I had to laugh about the "bad for my relationships" comment  because Adam and I did get in the most ridiculous of all ridiculous fights today, most likely brought on by all that togetherness.

I also committed a faux pas by taking a nap (going to bed) angry. Adam said, "Aren't we going to talk about this?", and I got all pouty and hollered, "NO!", and then took a nap. But really it worked because when I woke up I was no longer mad, mostly because A. The Fight was Stupid and B. It was snowing like crazy!

It has been snowing non-stop for six hours! Never in all my years in Alabama have I seen snow like this, usually we just get a dusting. Tomorrow it will be a mess I'm sure, but tonight it is just gorgeous. I love sitting around watching it snow, snow, snow.

The time off has given me a lot of downtime of course, and I've been watching the Olympics non-stop. I am an Olympic fiend, I have been since the first Olympics that I remember (Atlanta, 1996). I just remember the moment when Kerri Strug vaulted in gymnastics on her injured ankle so clearly, I think that is when I got hooked.

I watched all four hours of the Opening Ceremonies on Friday, and I had some fun with the whole #sochiproblems thing. When the one snowflake didn't materialize into an Olympic ring, my friend said, "Someone just disappeared because of that mishap." All jokes aside, I really love Russia & their culture & history.

I do have some unanswered questions about the Olympics though. How come people don't bet on the speed skaters, like they do horses? Who decided to combine shooting and racing on skis? When does one wake up and decide they want to luge? How come there aren't more South American bobsled teams ala the Jamaican Bobsled team?

Yes, I have been watching most of the sports mentioned above, but I have yet to see my favorite Winter Olympic sport, CURLING! Curling is so absurd in so many ways, and I absolutely love that there are people in the world who have devoted years to this sport, spending days on days, brushing the ice and HOLLERING at a stone.  But it is oddly compelling isn't it?

And of course, I love figure skating. I have been to champions on ice many times over the years, and I remember being a wee little kid pretending with my friends to be Nancy Kerrigan & Tonya Harding. I was Tonya Harding of course. But this was before she did all the bad stuff (and I don't mean the sex tape).

So I want to thank Winter Storm Pax for allowing me the time to get my "Olympics On," as the kids would say. That is, if they kids are even watching the Olympics nowadays.
